Still stuck in traffic..? Wake up & go for ERP & Road Space Rationing on Indian Roads...

The Issue

What's the solution to control traffic on Indian cities???

Building flyovers, more and more ring roads endlessly is definitely not a solution.  It’s like putting a band aid on the skin for a cancer patient.

Let's look at other countries and cities of the world how they have solved traffic problem.

 1. ERP - Electronic Road Pricing. This is used in Singapore & Hong Kong. Remember they are small islands. They have limited land area.

The authorities in Singapore & Hong Kong have introduced this Computer based technique in which toll increases as per the congestion increases.

So at different times of the day, toll can vary at a point.

This allows drivers to come up with alternate ways to commute.

Remember congestion on the road is not external. We are congestion on the road.

 2. Road space rationing.  This had been used in Mexico City, Santiago, Sau Paulo, Beijing and other cities.

São Paulo, with a fleet of 6 million vehicles in 2007, is the largest metropolis in the world with such a travel restriction, implemented first in 1996 as measured to mitigate air pollution, and thereafter made permanent in 1997 to relieve traffic congestion.

Here vehicles are allowed on the roads based on the vehicle registration and day of the week. Some days even number vehicles are allowed a and other days odd number vehicles.

Hope it works in New Delhi.

3. Need to promote bicycles and two wheelers on the road and discourage use of cars. There should be tax exemption for people who use bicycles and two wheeler, public transport.

Just a suggestion, for citizens who use bicycles or motor cycles should be exempted from toll or very less toll

Let PAN Cards or Adhar Cards be smart cards which can be swiped at the toll gates for tax cuts/exemption on a pro rata basis or toll charges reduction/exemption .

Incentives work !!!

 4. Road tax should not be increased for car owners. But they need to pay more in terms of road usage on a day to day basis.  We need to come up with rules like

    a. If someone car pools ie there are 4 people on the road then no charges

    b. If there are 3 people in the car then some charge

    c. If there are 2 people in the car then some more charge.

    d. If single driver then very heavy penalty needs to imposed.

Similar solution is being used in San Francisco.  You can go on a faster lane if there are 4 people in the car.

We need to have very strong measures to curb traffic menace.

5.  Have better bus service instead of Metro trains. Metro trains are costly Have hundreds of comfortable high end AC buses on the roads. Like Ahmedabad, make a separate track for buses.

6. In India any of the cities we don't follow lane discipline.  Most of traffic jams and slow moving traffic is caused because people changing lanes.  It's a simple solution. .Make proper lanes for two wheelers and cars.  Have cameras capture any lane violation and penalties issued.  Even if cameras are costly option our traffic police can make a note of lane violation and issue ticket via post.

 7. There should be very heavy penalty if no emission test report as environment is not for us bit for our children and grandchildren.

Lot of people might say it's difficult to implement. Agreed!!

It's not difficult but  very difficult but not impossible.

We have to make a choice. .shall we leave a legacy of congested, crowded, polluted cities or clean air, swift moving and hassle free traffic for our children.

If you believe in improving our traffic situation on our roads, then please sign this petition. Do this as a favor to our generations to come.
