Stephanie Ohman started this petition to Governor Steve Sisolak

The term PANDAS was coined in the 1980s by Susan E. Swedo, M.D., FAAP, chief of the Pediatrics and Developmental Neuroscience Branch at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), after she discovered a link between abrupt-onset obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and group A Streptococcus (GAS).

The diagnostic criteria for PANDAS include sudden-onset OCD or severely restricted food intake, Dr. Swedo said, and at least two of the following symptoms:

anxiety;emotional lability or depression;irritability or aggression;behavioral regression;attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-like symptoms that cause a deterioration in school performance;sensory or motor abnormalities; andsomatic symptoms like sleep disturbances and frequent urination.

PANDAS is a subset of Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS), which has the same symptoms but can be caused by infections like varicella or influenza. Cognitive behavioral therapy can benefit those with mild PANDAS/PANS. Others may need anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids, intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) or therapeutic plasmapheresis may be necessary. IVIG and plasma exchange, however, can be expensive and difficult to get approved by insurance.

Solution...
Having insurance companies look at the newer research and speak with PANDAS specialists from other states, you will see that the only solution for some of these children is IVIG or plasmapheresis. Allowing Nevada Medicaid and those alike to provide coverage for these treatments, many children will see positive results and get their lives back.

I started this petition because...
My 7 year old daughter, Lilly, was diagnosed April 18, 2018 with PANDAS. She has been misdiagnosed with multiple mental illnesses, starting at age 2. After many failed treatment attempts and medication after medication, we are at a halt in her treatment due to the high cost of IVIG and plasmapheresis. We have traveled out of state, as far as Illinois to meet with specialist and they have all encouraged us to start IVIG as soon as possible. She has lost 5 years of her short life to due to this disease and there are many more like her who deserve to live a happy and healthy life. PANDAS doesn't just go away but with the right treatment and proper diagnosis, children will no longer suffer in silence.
