As you know, tomorrow (January 6th) is the last day that Congress can object to the Electoral College’s vote. Politico reports that there are Representatives who are considering challenging Trump’s win. They are Reps. Ed Perlmutter of Colorado, Bobby Scott of Virginia, John Conyers of Michigan, and Jamie Raskin of Maryland. Their numbers are: Ed Perlmutter (202) 225-2645 Bobby Scott (202) 225-8351 John Conyers (202) 225-5126 Jamie Raskin (202) 225-5341 Call and ask that they “PLEASE object to the Electoral College vote.” They will need at least one Senator to object as well. Find your Senators’ Washington, D. C. phone numbers at https://www.usa.gov/elected-officials and ask that they “object to the Electoral College vote” as well. There are members of Congress who are hearing us and standing with us. I received this response from Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon: Thank you for contacting me about Steve Bannon and the Trump administration. I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue. As you know, the Trump administration recently announced that Steve Bannon would serve as chief White House strategist and senior counselor. This role does not require confirmation by the Senate. Like you, I am deeply concerned about this announcement. Steve Bannon ran a website that trafficked in anti-Semitism and boasted of being the voice of white nationalists. It’s outrageous that one of the first announcements from the Trump administration is to announce the chief strategist will be a man who not only tolerated hate in every form, but actively courted and fomented it. As the son of German-Jewish immigrants, I find this deeply troubling and unacceptable. But it’s not just me saying this, reasonable people on the left and the right are alarmed that the president-elect is choosing to invite someone with this kind of record into the White House. The fact that Mr. Trump’s allies are dismissing anti-Semitism, misogyny and white nationalism so lightly demonstrates a shocking lack of respect for history and starts this administration off on a stunningly wrong foot. Please know that going forward, I will continue to stand up for all Oregonians and I will fight for the values and the policies that are important to Oregon and our country. ------------------------------------------------------------------- The confirmation hearings for Trump’s cabinet picks start on January 9th and the ones we’ve picked to object to are as follows: January 10th Position: Attorney general Nominee: Sen. Jeff Sessions Who to contact to object: Senate Judiciary https://www.judiciary.senate.gov/about/members Why object?: In 1986 during Ronald Reagan’s administration, but he was voted down 10-8 by a Republican-controlled Senate panel for being too racist. If he was too racist to be a federal judge in 1986, we don’t need him as Attorney General now. January 11th Position: Education secretary Nominee: Betsy DeVos Who to contact to object: Senate HELP (Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions) http://www.help.senate.gov/about/members Why object?: Betsy DeVos has no experience as an educator, and her support of privatizing public education isn’t the right choice for Secretary for Education and our children’s future. Position: Secretary of State Nominee: Rex Tillerson Who to contact to object: Senate Foreign Relations http://www.foreign.senate.gov/about/committee-membership Why object?: Tillerson’s strong ties to Russia and specifically to Vladimir Putin make him the wrong choice for Secretary of State. Tillerson worked closely with Putin to secure oil deals in Russia despite U.S. sanctions against Russia and also ran a U.S.-Russian oil firm based in the Bahamas to avoid paying taxes. Date to be determined Position: Treasury secretary Nominee: Steven Mnuchin Who to contact to object: Senate Finance committee http://www.finance.senate.gov/about/membership Why object?: Mnuchin is a former Goldman Sachs executive who has been called the “Eviction King” in various articles for his involvement in foreclosing on nearly 36,000 California homeowners during the housing crisis. Please stand with us, and please keep fighting. If we don’t stand up for ourselves, no one will, and it will be a long, hard four years. Remember, we’re stronger together!
