Allow the Reflective Traffic Calmer Prototype to Remain.
The Issue
After a child was struck in the middle of a crosswalk in a school zone on Hawthorne St. last year I began work on an idea that might make the 30km/h speed limits in school zones actually enforceable. ( 1 in 7 people traveled TWICE that speed During school hours last year in that same zone, it was later found)
After a winter of testing a small proof of concept on the edge of the driveway of the property I rent in, I was confident enough to build a full scale version, somewhere it would see a bit of vehicle traffic and snowplowing this winter, the last hurdle this has to being ready to help save lives, which could hopefully be a pilot project next spring, but not if the city destroys it as they did the 3D crosswalk I painted last summer.
The thing is built, it is far enough along that you can see for yourself it will work. I can have it snowplow proof before winter. It is a hindrance to nobody. It is only 1cm tall, has slanted sides, and could not make its presence more obvious.
It is in one of the two 'one-way' driveways of a currently practically unused (due to Covid) city owned Rec Centre.
I believe variations on this idea will make 0 deaths at crosswalks in residential areas possible, and actually enforce the 30km/h speed limit in school zones.
I have taken the idea this far, but I need more than me fighting this time if we're going to get to keep it. In the words of Dr. Seuss from The Lorax :
"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."
As I am publishing this, I have just been told the matter has been forwarded to the police. I will post updates on what is happening with it as often as I can here : https://twitter.com/StreetArtNS
