Statement and petition on the situation in Afghanistan

We watch the dramatic events unfolding in Afghanistan with dismay. In our projects and networks, we work together with numerous cultural workers, civil society actors and human rights activists located in Afghanistan. We are very concerned for our partners and their families, especially for all the women who have been involved in civil society work and have fought for basic and human rights over the past 20 years and who now fear for their own and their families' lives. We are looking for ways to help as an association and as a women's network.

At the same time, we are appalled by the statements of Christian Democratic politicians that 2015 should not be repeated with regard to the reception of refugees. We strongly condemn these statements, which once again strengthen the inhumane, anti-democratic discourse of the far right. The crisis of 2015 was a failure of German and European refugee policy, which now threatens to repeat itself. By contrast, since its founding in the fall of 2015, WIR MACHEN DAS has stood for understanding immigration as an opportunity to be co-shaped with the new arrivals. We stand for looking together to the future together instead of back to nativism, for courage instead of fear, humanity instead of hatred, pragmatism instead of populism, and we will continue to fight for these values. That was true in 2015 - and we still stand by it today.

We therefore urge the federal government to,

  • establish a permanent air-bridge to fly to Germany as many as possible of those who are threatened by the Taliban ((Demand updated on 26.08.21 due to the cessation of evacuation measures by the German Armed Forces at Kabul Airport: We call on the German government to open alternative escape routes))
  • to allow entry without passports, without this being held to the disadvantage of the fleeing people
  • to enable the fleeing people to apply for asylum directly on the spot in Afghanistan, e.g. at Kabul airport as well as at other transit locations
  • to allow threatened people to take their entire family with them, including parents, adult siblings and adult children
to welcome the people in Germany and to grant them protection with as little bureaucracy as possible.
