Petition updateProtect Philly's Pop-Up Beer GardensUpdate: John Taylor says he's mostly getting calls from the pop-up haters

Philadelphia Democratic Progressive Caucus
Aug 3, 2014
This was a huge week for our campaign to protect the pop-up gardens.
Three politicians - City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson, state Senator Larry Farnese, and state Senator (and Mayoral candidate) Anthony Williams - went public with their support for the existing law, and the LCB's interpretation of it. And we're hearing that some Philly lawmakers who haven't gone public yet have also been lobbying for the gardens behind the scenes too, at the LCB, and with Rep. John Taylor.
But Rep. Taylor still doesn't get it. He's worried the 2012 liquor license reforms may have created a whole new pop-up "industry" that threatens to bring low-cost fun outdoor environments to neighborhoods outside of Center City next summer. The horrors! Taylor also says he's hearing mostly from people *opposed* to the gardens. Here's what his chief of staff told the Daily News:
"Since Don's story ran, the phone hasn't stopped ringing at the office of state Rep. John Taylor, chairman of the House Liquor Control Committee.
"Constituents are concerned that a bar could pop up in a vacant lot on their block," says Taylor's chief of staff, Marc Collazzo."
Pop-up haters definitely aren't a majority, but John Taylor is going to get away with portraying things that way, as pretext for a crackdown this fall, if we don't turn up the volume.
Can you donate $5 or $10 today to help raise $5000 for a direct mail piece to John Taylor's district targeting Millennial super-voters?

Taylor - who is head of the city Republican Party - doesn't have a Democratic opponent this cycle, but it's never too early to start building a big list of young progressive voters in the Fishtown section of the 177th District.
To do that we need your help. Give $5 or $10 today to help us send a louder message directly to Taylor's district to stop inventing problems and get back to work on the real issues like fixing Philly schools.
