Dear Friends & Allies:
First, thank you so much for continuing to care for Tiffany and support her freedom. Last night, Tiffany was feeling pretty down and worried and so I read to her so many of the beautiful comments that you have shared for her. So, thank you!
Tiffany is a juvenile sex trafficking survivor, not a criminal so her incarceration is unconscionable. Life in Pulaski State prison, where she is housed, is terrifying. There are recent reports of sexual assaults, abuse, isolation and gangs. Tiffany lives constantly in unsafe conditions and we worry deeply for her safety. Enough is enough and Tiffany needs to be free. (This is a very intense article about Pulaski that speaks about a young survivor we are also serving there; read with caution.)
We have been working with Tiffany for 9 years and were joined by her new legal defense team in October 2020. We have hope that Tiffany will soon be free. On January 4th, her legal team and Karana Rising stood by Tiffany's side in her habeas hearing. We are now preparing for the next step, which is the writing of the brief for submission to the judge – a critical step in Tiffany's case.
Without strong and persuasive arguments, Tiffany is still in jeopardy of 10 more years in prison.
We are closer than we’ve ever been in seeing Tiffany Simpson walk out of prison and be free.We have created the Tiffany Simpson Legal Defense Fund to help secure her freedom. We need your help urgently.
Karana Rising is urgently raising $11,000 to support the legal defense of Tiffany Simpson, a survivor of child sex trafficking who has been in jail for more than 10 years. Her legal defense team has already contributed over 250 hours of their small firm's resources.
Tiffany received a degree in cosmetology and completed her GED while in prison. She has advocated for herself and continues to advocate for other survivors.
Tiffany never gives up hope.
Tiffany is an inspiration. Karana Rising's Survivor Justice Initiative serves young survivors across the country who are facing incarceration, arrest and unjust treatment by the criminal justice system. Being a victim of human trafficking should not be a pathway to incarceration for many young women and men, especially young women and men of color. Inspired by our work with Tiffany and so many more, we are working to educate prosecutors, defense attorneys and judges, and create a survivor network to prevent wrongful incarcerations like Tiffanys.
