Let's get the shark patrol plane onboard with Shark Watch SA for sighting alerts!
The issue
Shark Watch SA is the largest state service provider for publicly available real-time shark sighting updates with a combined organic following of 156,000 people across its social media outlets! And boy, isn't it growing! Since the establishment of the Shark Watch site back in 2014, the service solely relies on the public to obtain sighting reports, as there are strict protocols in place for shark sightings made by the local shark patrol services that are not inclusive of Shark Watch.
Now, in our seventh season of operation, it's time to gain some credibility! WE NEED YOUR HELP TO GET THIS FITTING PARTNERSHIP UP AND GOING! The seasonal fixed-wing patrol is assigned by the State Emergency Service. When a sighting is made by the crew onboard this aircraft, they are instructed to immediately report back the information to SAPOL (NOT SHARK WATCH), who will then relay the information on their Twitter feed. However, we have found that some of these reports lack detail, aren't always timely and not every shark sighting is posted!
***If shark sightings are relayed back to Shark Watch SA, we plan to have every shark sighting broadcast within minutes, with a greater level of engagement throughout the community thanks to our five digital report distribution platforms.***
People take reports on Shark Watch SA very seriously! You would think that if there is an opportunity to amplify shark sighting reports to a wider scale audience, that it would be taken, but IT STILL AWAITS FULFILMENT. Please note that we acknowledge that SLSSA has its own protocol with aerial shark sightings, which is far more efficient than the fixed-wing patrol, and for this reason, this petition does not apply to this organisation.
Show your support and let's change the way seasonal shark sightings are being broadcast out of the best interest of the public!
