State Dept: Stop the waste — don’t destroy 500 tons of emergency food meant to save lives
The Issue
The U.S. government is about to destroy nearly 500 metric tons of emergency food rations—high-energy biscuits that were purchased with taxpayer money and intended to keep people alive during humanitarian crises.
Why? Because no one used them in time.
These rations have been sitting in a warehouse in Dubai for months. They’re now close to expiration, and instead of donating them to trusted aid groups or redirecting them to areas in need - even in the US, the plan is to burn them—at an additional cost of $100,000.
Each biscuit isn’t just a calorie—it’s a chance at survival. Two servings a day can keep a child alive during famine, conflict, or disaster. This food may not be gourmet, but it was made for the purpose of saving lives. Destroying it is unconscionable.
We’re calling on the U.S. State Department, Department of Defense, and relevant federal agencies to immediately:
- Halt the planned destruction of these emergency rations
- Partner with NGOs, food banks, or international organizations to distribute them before they expire!!
Food waste on this scale isn’t just inefficient. It’s immoral. Let’s get these rations to the people who need them—before it’s too late.
