Start dredging waterways in East Midlands to improve flood prevention measures.
The Issue
Thousands of homes across the East Midlands are now encountering severe flooding every year. This poses a massive risk to people and animals across the region.
Places such as: Huncote, Narborough, Whetstone, Broughton Astley and Cosby in Leicestershire have seen a dramatic increase of flooding which is getting worse
People are being forced to move out to a safe location while water levels recede to then asses the damages to their property.
There is also a significant risk to livestock, and other animals seeking shelter during these conditions. There have also been multiple incidents reported of people being injured or trapped during these floods.
This needs immediate action from all Local Authorities to start putting in measures to try and reduce flood risks in the East Midlands.
You can clearly see from yearly data the flood risks have now gradually risen to an unacceptable manner. Flooding occurs more frequently with less amount of rain. Why can't our waterways now cope with the rainfall that it used to cope with?
There are thousands of residents over the East Midlands that would like an answer to these questions, and if/when actions are going to be carried out to start preventing this issue.
Rivers must be dredged to remove sediment buildup, and widened when possible to help increase the drainage capacity. Drains must be cleaned and inspected as currently a lot are in disrepair and full of debris.
New development plans need to be halted before sufficient surveys have been carried out which will justify if the current drainage system can cope with the added developments. This isn’t happening and as a result we are seeing more flooding!
