The Issue

In rural communities like Humboldt County, California, we are facing a growing crisis in equine veterinary services. Our ranches and horse communities desperately need more large animal veterinarians, yet we are seeing a national shortage of young professionals entering this vital field. This situation doesn't just impact local farmers and horse owners, but also the well-being of the animals themselves.

Many people here in Humboldt County have experienced the heartache and struggle of finding qualified veterinary care for their horses. The demand far outstrips the supply, and travel to distant areas for adequate care is often the only option. We believe a solution lies close at hand if we consider the potential of Cal Poly Humboldt.

Cal Poly Humboldt is in a unique position to address this issue by launching a veterinary program that could specialize in large animal and equine veterinary services. With the recent acquisition of 191 acres of agricultural land in Arcata Bottoms, Cal Poly Humboldt now has an amazing opportunity to create a reputable program while also serving the needs to the local and statewide communities. By establishing such a program, Cal Poly Humboldt can join UC Davis as one of the only public universities in California to offer specialized training for future veterinarians, particularly in the Northern part of the state.

This new program would not only help alleviate the shortage of equine veterinarians state and nationwide, but would also bring educational and economic benefits to the Humboldt community. It could lead to increased enrollment, more job opportunities, and a boost in local business from students and staff. Plus, it would position Cal Poly Humboldt as a central hub for veterinary excellence, drawing both students and attention from across the nation.

Supporting the launch of a veterinary program at Cal Poly Humboldt means supporting our local communities, farmers, and furry friends. With the national shortage of veterinarians, especially those skilled in equine services, it's crucial we take action now.

Join me in urging the administration of Cal Poly Humboldt to take this transformative step. This initiative holds the key to nurturing the next generation of compassionate and dedicated veterinarians. Please sign this petition and help us make a lasting difference in the lives of horses and their owners across California and beyond.
