Start a School Newspaper In Davis Drive Elementary

The Issue

Davis Drive Elementary used to have a school "newscast". Every Friday, we would gather around the small tv mounted on our classroom wall,  waiting for that acne-beholden fifth-grader to pop up on the screen with a Davy Dolphin puppet. As a second grader, I'm sure I wasn't the only one who dreamed of being on that screen, informing kindergarteners of the book fair. But when Covid-19 hit our schools, this obviously ended. When we got back to school in fourth grade, I was thrilled during the first Friday of the school year, to finally see that newscast I'd missed. But. to the dismay of my 9-year-old heart, there was no gangly, oily face on the screen.

Now, in fifth grade at last, it is my mission to bring back this important tradition in the form of a newspaper. Not only will this be a fun experience for the little kids (reading a newspaper, just like Daddy!), it'll be a profound experience for the fifth graders working on it.

Many fifth graders have never worked on something as large or meaningful as a school newspaper. This will allows fifth-graders to leave Davis Drive Elementary knowing that they left their mark on the school and its students. This newspaper would be online to be environmentally friendly, and would not only cover the news in our very own school sweet school, but it would also take real-world news, and put it in elementary-school terms.

Not only that, but this newspaper would also teach students about how their voice can make a difference and the impact that writing can make.

As Whitney Hueston once said, " I believe the children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way.". This newspaper will do just that.
