The issue
As a mother of a high-needs autistic son, I have witnessed firsthand the detrimental impact that school holidays can have on his well-being. My son thrives on structure and routine; however, by the fifth day of the holidays, his routine is disrupted, leading to a significant deterioration in his behavior. This results not just in daily challenges, but also pushes him towards complete burnout. No parent should have to watch their child struggle without the necessary support.
Recognizing the importance of routine for children with autism, I am calling for the establishment of a specialized school holiday program aimed at providing a structured environment tailored to their needs. Such a program would not only benefit my son but countless other children who require routine to maintain their stability and well-being.
Studies have shown that maintaining a consistent routine is essential for the cognitive and emotional development of autistic children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1 in 44 children in the United States is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This highlights the broad need for programs that cater to their specific needs, particularly during school breaks.
A school holiday program should provide structured activities that mirror the school environment, focusing on tailored educational content, behavioral management, and social interaction opportunities. This initiative would help bridge the gap that school holidays create, preventing regression and promoting continuous development.
We urge local education authorities, school boards, and government bodies to take urgent action by supporting and funding such programs. By investing in the development of these programs, we can ensure that autistic children have access to the continued support they require, even during school breaks.
Please join me in advocating for the creation of a school holiday program tailored for autistic children, so that each child can enjoy their break without compromising their routine. Sign this petition and make a difference for these children and their families. Together, we can build a more inclusive and supportive environment for all."
