Today, Sunday 29th March 2026 marks the opening of Bedlington Station on the Northumberland Line, and essentially the completion of the first phase of the line, with a northern extension to Newbiggin by the Sea already being progressed and announced by Northumberland County Council amongst others. It is not the end of the revival of rail, merely the end of the beginning.
I would contend that another obvious expansion of the Northumberland Line is shown in the image above of Bedlington Junction; with the route heading into the centre distance being that to Hepscott.
At Hepscott then the line branches to Morpeth station if heading left, but to the right is towards Pegswood, which enables the Northumberland Coast Loop route from Newcastle to Berwick and Edinburgh via Bedlington.
The overall route would not require new stations to be built for it to operate successfully, as the Bedlington to Pegswood section of line simply connects two established and successful passenger lines (ECML and Northumberland Line) but services using the route could certainly help to build the case for Choppington station to be rebuilt, as well as the potential for a 'Morpeth North' station to be built too if Morpeth requires a more direct call than using the existing station at Pegswood.
As of today, the petition has enjoyed the support of 1,159 people, and to all of you a massive thanks for your support so far, but today marks the next chapter of the campaign now Bedlington is completed, so watch this space in coming days, weeks, and months!
Thank you all again for your support, and as ever, please share with friends and family to maintain the momentum! Yours, Ryan.
