Katelyn Jones started this petition to Star Alliance and

I call upon the Star Alliance to remove Ethiopian Airlines from the Star Alliance due to Ethiopian Airlines' well-documented transport of weapons used in war against the Tigray region of Ethiopia. According to Ethiopian Airlines documents, testimony by Ethiopian Airlines employees, and photographic evidence, Ethiopian Airlines has transported weapons and materials of war on commercial flights since the start of its internal conflict in November of 2020. The Convention on International Civil Aviation (the "Chicago Convention") prohibits commercial airlines from transporting munitions or implements of war. Ethiopian Airlines has blatantly violated this Convention and has even assigned commercial flight codes to flights transporting weapons, while other commercial flights made a stop in Eritrea to supply munitions prior to continuing on to other nations.

While the Ethiopian government has denied accusations of genocide or ethnic cleansing by Ethiopian and Eritrean solders in Tigray, war crimes by its soldiers have been well documented by outside journalists and human rights organizations. Regardless of the Ethiopian government's denial of nearly all war crimes and violations committed by its soldiers - and regardless of the Ethiopian government's denial of the targeting of Tigrayan businesses and the widespread and well-documented elimination of Tigrayans from government positions throughout Ethiopia - the Ethiopian government cannot deny testimony, photographic evidence, and credible documents that prove its abuses of power, extensive ethnic discrimination, and humanitarian violations. Interested parties must act to hold the Ethiopian Government - including its subsidiary Ethiopian Airlines - accountable to international conventions and law

In 2010 the Chief Executive Board of the Star Alliance approved Ethiopian Airlines to become its 30th member. I call upon the Star Alliance to immediately take the following steps in regards to Ethiopian Airlines:

  1. Provide a formal press release acknowledging the evidence showing its member Ethiopian Airlines' use of commercial flights to transport weapons and supplies of war
  2. In strict terms condemn the use of its members' flights to transport weapons or supplies of war, making it clear that such actions are a violation of the Chicago Convention
  3. Formally suspend or expel Ethiopian Airlines from the Star Alliance
  4. Develop a formal policy to guide future review of airlines that violate international conventions in regards to use of commercial flights for the purposes of transporting weapons of war.

By signing this petition, you provide your endorsement of the above stance and agreement that the world's largest airline alliance (Germany-based Star Alliance) should not promote airlines that transport weapons or supplies of war on commercial flights.

Please note that your signature will be retained by the petition-maker and your name and information will never be provided to the Ethiopian government or Ethiopian Airlines.
