Standardize the Legal Age of Adulthood in the United States

The Issue

As a young American, I have experienced firsthand the inconsistencies and discrimination that arise from our nation's conflicting age laws. Despite being legally able to vote, serve on a jury, and even be drafted at 18 years old, I am denied other basic rights until I reach 21. This includes purchasing alcohol, booking a hotel room, renting a car or buying cigarettes. This discrepancy is not only confusing but also inherently unfair. If we are expected to go off to college and live by ourselves at 18, then we should have the same rights as any other adult.

The United States needs to standardize its legal age of adulthood across all areas of law. The current system creates an arbitrary distinction between "mature" and "immature" that seems to benefit governmental interests more than it does individual citizens. Why am I not mature enough to drink a beer but the government considers me mature enough to serve on a jury and decide the fate of someone’s life?

This issue affects millions of young Americans each year who are left in limbo between childhood and adulthood. For instance, many 18-20 year olds travel across the country for college only to find themselves unable to book hotel rooms due to their age.

According to data from the U.S Census Bureau in 2018, there were approximately 13 million people aged between 18-20 living in America (U.S Census Bureau). That's around 13 million individuals who are considered adults for some purposes but children for others - an inconsistency that needs addressing.

We urge lawmakers to establish one consistent legal age of adulthood across all areas of law. It is time we respect our young adults' ability to make informed decisions about their lives without arbitrary restrictions based on their age.

Please sign this petition if you believe in fairness and consistency within our legal system.
