Stand With Maine: Protect Student Privacy and Trans Rights

Stand With Maine: Protect Student Privacy and Trans Rights
The Issue
Right now, the U.S. Department of Justice—under President Trump—is demanding the names of every student athlete in Maine.
The reason? To enforce a federal order banning transgender students from participating in school sports.
This isn’t about fairness in athletics. It’s about overreach, surveillance, and discrimination.
In a sealed subpoena, the DOJ ordered the Maine Principals’ Association (MPA) to hand over personally identifiable information for all student athletes—even students completely unrelated to the case. Maine’s school leaders are fighting back in court, saying the subpoena goes too far and would violate student privacy.
We stand with them.
We, the undersigned, call on the U.S. Department of Justice to immediately withdraw its demand for student names and rosters from the MPA.
End its politically motivated effort to target transgender youth in Maine and across the country,
Respect Maine’s right to govern its own schools and protect its students from federal overreach!
Maine schools already have policies in place. These decisions belong with local educators, parents, and communities—not Washington politicians trying to score political points off vulnerable students.
This case isn’t just about transgender athletes. It’s about whether the federal government can use executive power to force schools to violate student privacy and target young people simply for being who they are.
In the face of threats and legal pressure, Maine’s leaders—including the Maine Principals’ Association and Governor Janet Mills—are standing up. They’re saying: We’ll see you in court.
Let’s make sure they know they’re not alone.
