Catalan artist Joan Dausà’s recent use of Te Haka has caused deep concern among Māori and Non-Māori communities because this powerful cultural practice is not being accurately represented.  A tradition carrying generations of knowledge, identity, and spiritual meaning is at risk, being reduced to a distorted version that does not reflect its true significance.

Te Haka is not simply a performance to be copied or adapted without cultural guidance — it is a living expression of Māori culture, history, identity, and mana.

When Māori perform a Haka, we are honouring the sacred customs and teachings of our ancestors and drawing on their strength and guidance to move forward with courage, safety, and hope into an uncertain future.

Te Haka carries and expresses powerful values, including wehi (awe and profound presence), mana (spiritual authority and dignity), toa (warrior strength and integrity), aroha (love, deep compassion and empathy), and aratakina (true leadership and guidance).

We are asking the artist and his team to take this opportunity to listen, learn, and work alongside Māori cultural practitioners who can provide guidance and ensure that Māori culture is represented with integrity and respect.

This is a call for respect, partnership, and cultural responsibility.

We ask the artist to:

*Stop and Rectify the current representation of Te Haka.
* Acknowledge the concerns raised by Māori communities.
*Work directly with Māori cultural practitioners to ensure authentic representation.
*Review and replace material that misrepresents Te Haka.
*Honour Māori culture by allowing Māori voices to guide its presentation.

When Māori culture is shared with audiences in Catalunya, Spain, and around the world, Māori must be part of that conversation.  Respecting Indigenous cultures means ensuring that they are represented with authenticity, integrity, and the guidance of the people to whom they belong.

By signing this petition, you stand with the Māori community in protecting the integrity of a treasured cultural tradition and supporting respectful cultural exchange.  Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa.

Uniu-vos a la comunitat Māori: Protegim la integritat de Te Haka 

La qüestió 

Demanem respecte, responsabilitat i una representació autèntica de la cultura Māori. 

L'ús recent de Te Haka per part de l'artista català Joan Dausà ens ha causat una profunda preocupació perquè aquesta important pràctica cultural no ha estat representada d’una manera rigurosa ni respetuosa. Una tradició que porta generacions de coneixement, identitat i significat espiritual està en perill, en ser reduïda a una versió distorsionada que no reflecteix el seu veritable significat. 

Te Haka no és simplement una actuació que es pugui copiar o adaptar sense orientació cultural: és una expressió viva de la cultura, la història, la identitat i el mana Māori. 

Quan els Māori interpretem un Haka, honorem els costums i ensenyaments sagrats dels nostres avantpassats i ens nodrim de la seva força i orientació per avançar amb coratge, seguretat i esperança cap a un futur incert. 

Te Haka porta i expressa valors poderosos, entre els quals hi ha el wehi (respecte i presència profunda), mana (autoritat espiritual i dignitat), toa (fortalesa i integritat guerreres), aroha (amor, compassió profunda i empatia), i aratakina ( guiatge i vertader lideratge). 

Demanem a l'artista i al seu equip que aprofitin aquesta oportunitat per escoltar, aprendre i treballar al costat de professionals de la cultura Māori que puguin oferir orientació i garantir que la cultura Māori es representi amb integritat i respecte. 

Aquesta és una crida al respecte, a la col·laboració i a la responsabilitat cultural. Per això, demanem a l'artista: 

●  Aturar i rectificar la representació actual de Te Haka. 
●  Reconèixer les preocupacions plantejades per la comunitat Māori. 
●  Treballar directament amb professionals de la cultura Māori per garantir una 

representació autèntica. 
●  Revisar i substituir el material que tergiversi Te Haka. 
●  Honorar la cultura Māori permetent que les persones Māori guiïn la seva presentació. 

Quan la cultura Māori es comparteix amb el públic de Catalunya, Espanya i arreu del món, els Māori han de formar part d'aquesta conversa. Respectar les cultures Indígenes significa garantir que siguin representades amb autenticitat, integritat i sota la direcció de les persones a qui pertanyen. 

En signar aquesta petició, donareu suport a la comunitat Māori en la protecció de la integritat d'una tradició cultural molt preuada i en el foment d'un intercanvi cultural respectuós.
