Right now, more than 31,000 nurses, pharmacists, midwives, therapists, and frontline staff at Kaiser Permanente facilities across California, Hawaii, and Oregon are on strike — demanding fair wages and adequate staffing to keep both patients and workers safe.

This is the largest strike in the 50-year history of the United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals. And it could grow to include 46,000 health care workers.

Their message is simple: They are overworked, underpaid, and stretched too thin to safely care for patients.

We, the undersigned, stand in full support of these frontline workers and call on Kaiser Permanente leadership to:

• Immediately offer a contract that includes fair pay that keeps up with inflation
• Address the staffing crisis with enforceable ratios and recruitment investments
• Stop blaming cost increases on workers, while health care executives continue to earn multi-million-dollar salaries
• Respect the vital, lifesaving role that these health care professionals play in our communities
   

Workers are asking for a 25% wage increase over four years, after falling behind by at least 7% compared to their peers. Kaiser has offered 21.5%, but employees say that doesn’t go far enough to fix years of lagging wages — or to recruit and retain the staff needed to keep patients safe.

This isn’t just about pay — it’s about burnout, patient load, and the future of care in one of the country’s largest nonprofit health systems.

Kaiser says clinics will stay open during the strike, but some services have already been delayed or moved to virtual appointments. That’s a sign of how essential these workers truly are — and why they deserve to be heard, respected, and fairly compensated.
