For nearly three decades, Getaway Cafe has been more than just a place to grab a meal, it’s been a beloved gathering spot for UC Riverside students, faculty, staff, and the greater Riverside community. Known for its atmosphere, iconic pizza, and deep ties to UCR culture, Getaway has stood as a small business success story built on hard work, heart, and community connection. This local business is an example of the dedication that inspires UCR students and the greater Riverside community.

Now, after 28 years of serving and supporting our campus, Getaway Cafe is being pushed out. Not because of a lack of support from the community, but because it is seen as competition by UCR itself. Rather than celebrating and collaborating with a cherished local institution, the university is making moves that threaten Getaway’s survival.

We believe UC Riverside should support local businesses that contribute to the vibrancy and spirit of the campus community, not push them aside.

Getaway Cafe is part of the Riverside story. It is part of the UCR experience. Losing it would mean losing a piece of what makes our community special.

We urge UCR leadership to reconsider and find a way to keep Getaway Cafe a proud neighbor and partner for years to come.
