Stand With Catholic Bishops: Protect Birthright Citizenship
The Issue
The US Conference of Catholic Bishops has filed a brief with the Supreme Court calling Trump's executive order restricting birthright citizenship "immoral and contrary to Catholic Church teachings." The order, which the Supreme Court hears arguments on Wednesday, would deny citizenship to children born in the US to undocumented immigrants.
The Bishops are not alone. Fifty-seven faith-based organizations — Catholics, Protestants, Muslims, Hindus, and Jews — have joined briefs opposing the order, citing the religious tradition of welcoming strangers. "I was a stranger and you took Me in," reads Matthew 25:35, quoted directly in filings before the court.
Six of the nine Supreme Court justices are Catholic or were raised Catholic. Justice Brett Kavanaugh publicly pledged at his confirmation hearings to "heed the message of Matthew 25" and serve "the least fortunate among us."
We are calling on the Supreme Court to honor those words — and the moral teaching of the Church — by rejecting Trump's order and upholding birthright citizenship for every child born on American soil.
