Stand Up For Safety: Oregon State Legislature Needs to Update Oregon Stalking Laws

Stand Up For Safety: Oregon State Legislature Needs to Update Oregon Stalking Laws
The Issue
76% of women murdered by an intimate partner were stalked, first. Oregon’s laws related to stalking haven’t kept up with the modern methods of stalking. Even when we know someone is becoming dangerous, not much can be done until AFTER the violence occurs.
The term "stalking" has evolved rapidly as communication and surveillance technologies have evolved. Some states have kept up with those changes. Other states, like Oregon, have not.
I will share my story in more detail once the court case wraps up. This petition is not about what happened to me; it's about what I learned (the hard way) through the process, and how Oregon's laws, or lack thereof, impact thousands of women who share my experience. In 2014 there was a nationwide survey that compared stalking laws in all 50 states. Oregon was at the bottom end, and hasn't made updates since.
I don't know how to change a law, but I will figure it out! I'm working with brilliant people who will help draft the right language. If you can help, or want to follow the progress, please find the Facebook group "Oregon Stalking Law Updates".
This petition is to express your desire to update Oregon's current stalking laws:
* increasing the possible sentence to more than 12 months depending on severity
* expanding the law to cover not just fear for "personal safety", but also emotional distress. Someone's behavior could impact your job, clients, or marriage.
* expanding the criteria to upgrade from a misdemeanor to a felony
