Stand Up for Heritage, Livability, and Thoughtful Development

Stand Up for Heritage, Livability, and Thoughtful Development
The Issue
We chose to live in this neighbourhood because of its strong sense of community. Neighbours know and support one another, people take pride in their homes and shared spaces, and the walkable streets and nearby natural areas create a setting that feels both connected and welcoming. With access to the Bedford Barrens and views of the Bedford Basin from DeWolf Park, this is a place where urban living and nature coexist.
As our area grows, we have an opportunity—and a responsibility—to ensure that new development strengthens these qualities rather than undermining them. Growth is essential, and new housing is needed, but it should be thoughtfully planned and scaled in ways that respect the surrounding community, protect heritage, align with infrastructure, road and parking capacity, and preserve access to the natural spaces that make this area unique.
The proposed Heritage Development Agreement for 1262 Bedford Highway (Honeycote Heritage Cottage) raises important questions about how we balance growth with heritage conservation, neighbourhood livability, and community input. We believe development should contribute positively to the area while maintaining the qualities that make it an attractive and inclusive place for people of all ages, incomes, and backgrounds.
We encourage local officials, planners, and developers to pursue solutions that support housing and growth while also recognizing the importance of heritage, public spaces, and compatibility with the surrounding neighbourhood. Thoughtful development and strong communities are not competing goals—they should go hand in hand.
Please join us in making your voice heard.
- Sign the petition to demonstrate community support.
- Share your views with Councillor Jean St-Amand before June 22.
- Attend the North West Community Council Public Hearing meeting on June 22nd at 6:00 p.m. in the Halifax Council Chambers on 1841 Argyle Street, Halifax.
Together, we can advocate for growth that respects our shared history, strengthens our community, and creates a vibrant and welcoming future for everyone.
