Allow Transgender Students To Follow The Uniform Guidelines That They Feel Comforable With
The Issue
For any transgender students, or anyone seriously considering it within the school, to be allowed to abide by the dress code and use the bathrooms of their correct gender.
Transgender students make up some of the most vulnerable students in schools. They have astronomical suicide attempt statistics (almost half of trans people will attempt suicide before the age of 21) which have been shown to be exacerbated by policies indirectly discriminating against trans students. Members of our sixth form have personally known trans students who have successfully killed themselves.
Changing these policies wouldn't affect other students but not doing so clearly and greatly affects trans students. There have been zero reported crimes by a trans person in any bathroom ever. In comparison hundreds of thousands of trans people have had a crime committed against them in bathrooms (assault, murder) including in schools and especially when trans people are made to use their biological sexes bathroom. So these policies aren't about protecting students at all, otherwise they would obviously be protecting transgender students.
I know of 5 transgender students within our school but realistically there are double that. About 4 of us will attempt suicide before we reach 21 (if there's 10 of us). Our school welcoming trans students equally by expanding inclusion policies would go so far to help us and could realistically prevent young deaths. The school already has an equality and diversity policy (created in response to the equality act 2010) so treating us equality should be a no issue. This is about trans people presenting how they feel they should be, how they want people to see them, to recognise themselves when they catch their reflection.
I hope you'll support our petition so you can see the happiness it brings us as the LGBT+ community but more so the profound change it can have to a trans persons school experience, lessening depression and anxiety, and the benefit it can have on their achievement. Thank you for reading this wall of text. Educating yourself on trans issues and signing to show support is amazing in and off itself. Thank you.
