St Peters Rd, Chellaston - Speed/Traffic Calming measures

St Peters Rd, Chellaston - Speed/Traffic Calming measures

The Issue

St Peters Road is used as a rat run for drivers trying to avoid the lights at the junction of High St  and Derby Rd/Swarkestone Rd.

Vehicles very often travel at up and down St Peters Rd at excessive speed on this long, straight residential street which has parked cars on both sides and is also on a bus route. The street houses many families with young children and is located near three schools which subsequently means there are often young children walking along the pavements. This presents a significant danger to other road users, parked vehicles and more importantly, a danger to the lives of residents, their children and animals.

Responses to previous enquiries indicated that speed bumps or other measures tend to be installed as a response to accident rates. There have been several near misses on the street over the years and finally a nasty accident on 10th August 2022, where a driver attempted to overtake a delivery van and collided with a stationary parked car.

Thankfully nobody was hurt on this occasion, although both cars were significantly damaged. We should not have to wait for someone to be injured or killed for safety measures to be in place to prevent vehicles travelling at excessive speed on St Peters Rd.

We, concerned residents of St Peters Rd and surrounding areas, strongly feel that adequate and appropriate traffic calming installations will safeguard the lives and property of residents and petition our local council to consider the installation of such measures.
