At Carnegie Mellon, all classes now have the option of "Pass/Fail." There are no restrictions on the number of classes that can use "P/F"; those passing (P) grades will override departmental/college policies for this semester.
Yale has also launched a new Universal Pass campaign: "No Fail Yale," which means there would be no possibility that a student would receive a "failing" or "D" grade. According to the campaign, this is more equitable than an opt-in Pass/Fail because students struggling (i.e. no internet access, stable housing, food security) may end up "draining themselves trying to stay afloat academically." By having a universal pass system, students will be able to "...work hard without fear of being academically punished because of factors outside of their control."
Having an opt-in pass/fail for every class, regardless of the difficulty level or major it applies to (i.e. PharmD) at St. John's is the least we can do. Although SJU has extended the deadline to April 3rd to apply for P/F, the university should take the initiative to apply P/F to all classes.
Please continue to share this petition with others. SJU is not listening to the now 2000+ signers we have. When will they make the change that needs to happen?
Personal note: I have tried to contact SJU's SGI with no luck. I asked them what I could help with, regarding policymaking, but there was no response, just a "read" receipt. It seems like they don't want anyone outside of the current e-board to be working on it.
