The Issue

I, like many others, have faced conflict in the workplace that has detrimentally affected my life. In 2019, I lost my job as an overnight restock clerk due to some problematic coworkers. They made my work environment hostile, which led to an altercation that consequently involved the police and court system. I was threatened with a potential sentence of 10 years for simply trying to defend myself. This experience resulted in hardship and financial struggle for over a month. This story is not unique to me; yet, individuals engaging in conflicts at work are often left with no means to fairly resolve their issues.

Research from the Workplace Bullying Institute in 2017 found that 19% of Americans have suffered abusive conduct at work, while another 20% have witnessed it. This shows a glaring need for a systemic approach to resolving workplace conflicts to prevent workers from facing job loss, potential legal issues, and personal hardship caused by unnecessary office strife.

Therefore, this petition demands the development and implementation of comprehensive conflict resolution mechanisms in workplaces nationwide. These mechanisms would provide a safe and protected space for employees to hash out their disagreements, misunderstandings or disputes without fear of job loss, legal consequences, or personal harm.
