Delay SQA exams instead of imposing prelim grades

The Issue

This petition seeks to ensure that SQA candidates are given as much influence as possible over their achievement of course grades in 2020.

The current Covid-19 situation is unprecedented and it is recognised that this has led to a situation which could not have been envisaged by anyone. This petition recognises this and advocates for an option which would be beneficial to students.

While acknowledging the difficulties which the SQA face, it is important that all of those who have studied for SQA exams are permitted to finish the courses and obtain the grades which they deserve. Many students are rightly concerned that prelims which they were told were unimportant due to a lack of appeals process, and second prelims which were rushed through in late March prior to school closures, do not reflect their true ability.

In recognition of both the current stress faced by young people sitting these exams, and the impact upon the potential of students which has been impacted by this unprecedented situation, it is suggested that postponing the exams and holding them before the next academic year would be a better option than imposing prelim grades or 'gathered evidence' to give a grade.

Having a clear plan, as far as possible, where the young people are able to be confident that their current and continued hard work can still pay off is exceptionally important to ensure the reduction of anxieties.

We need to support our young people, and their potential - delaying these exams is the best way of doing that.

Given the inconsistencies inn local authority discussion and the fast moving nature of this situation it is important that there is more transparency and support.
