Springfield, IL Replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples' Day.

The Issue

The individual behind this petition would like to share a personal grievance with the traditional celebration of Christopher Columbus Day, a figure associated with one of the largest genocides in human history. Known for initiating the horrific mistreatment of the Taino people, including enslavement, violation, and torture, Columbus has symbolic ties to human rights abuses and the onset of slavery. Additionally, it is important to note that Columbus never even set foot on current U.S. soil.

Given these arguments, there is a strong need to reassess our historical narratives and consider more respectful alternatives. Solely recognizing Indigenous Peoples' Day instead of Columbus Day offers an opportunity to honor the original inhabitants of this land and allows us to rectify part of the historical injustice amplifying hidden voices.

About 14 states, 130 cities, and a few counties observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead of or in addition to Columbus Day (Smithsonian Magazine, 2019). By adopting this change, our city would be part of a growing trend of honoring a more historically truthful narrative and would set an example for other communities to follow.

Please sign this petition to eliminate Christopher Columbus Day from our city’s calendar and give prominence to Indigenous Peoples' Day. Your signature is a contribution to correcting our shared historical narrative.
