The Issue

In September 2006, the landscape of broadcast television changed permanently when United Paramount Network (UPN) and The WB ceased operations to merge into The CW. While intended to combine the best of both worlds, decades of broadcast history and distinct brand identities were lost.

Following Nexstar Media Group’s acquisition of The CW in 2022, the network's identity has fundamentally shifted. The landscape changed further when Paramount Global’s CBS News and Stations withdrew its eight key affiliates in major markets like Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Atlanta, forcing a fragmented web of new local affiliation agreements.

The CW no longer serves the audiences that once loved The WB and UPN. It is time to undo the 2006 merger and bring back these iconic brands.

Our Proposal:

  1. Dissolve The CW Network: Wind down the current joint-venture structure.
  2. Revive The WB: Relaunch the network as a joint venture between Warner Bros. Discovery and Nexstar Media Group, focusing on high-quality drama, comedy, and youth-focused programming.
  3. Revive UPN: Relaunch UPN under the sole ownership of the newly formed Paramount Skydance, bringing back its historic legacy of diverse comedies, sci-fi, and unique sports/entertainment programming.

By signing this petition, we call on Nexstar, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Paramount Skydance to recognize the value of these nostalgic brands and restore true variety to over-the-air broadcast television.
