Every child deserves a fair opportunity to learn, participate, and play safely.
Our current 6U football team has approximately 30 players, yet 6U games consist of only 48 total plays. League rules require every child to participate in a minimum of six plays per game, making it mathematically impossible for a roster of this size to consistently meet participation requirements while maintaining a fair and organized game.
More importantly, this is about the safety and development of young athletes. At the 6U level, children are learning the fundamentals of football for the very first time. With such a large roster, coaches cannot reasonably provide the individual instruction, supervision, and correction each player needs. Proper blocking, tackling, positioning, and technique require hands-on coaching, and without it, children are more likely to develop poor habits that can increase their risk of injury.
We are asking the Upper Chesapeake Youth Football League to split the current 6U roster into two teams before the season schedule is finalized. This request is not about creating a competitive advantage or accommodating personal preferences. It is about ensuring every child receives meaningful playing time, quality coaching, and a safe environment in which to learn and enjoy the game.
We recognize and appreciate the work the league has put into organizing the season, and we understand that schedule adjustments can be challenging. However, the well-being, development, and safety of these young athletes should remain the highest priority.
By signing this petition, you are asking the league to act in the best interests of every child by creating smaller, more manageable teams that provide equal opportunities for participation, proper instruction, and a safer football experience. Every young athlete deserves the chance to learn, grow, and play the game the way it was intended.
