Speed Cameras and Higher Fines Needed to Stop Deadly Drag Races in Area

The Issue

Hi there, my name is Forrest and I'm a member of the local Hilsboro/Beaverton area. I've been living here since December of 2020 and I have found the people and community to be nothing short of enchanting. I have to pinch myself regularly to remind myself I'm awake and that this is indeed where I call home. Over the last two years I've gotten to know and care about people here and I mention this because I have a serious issue I need your help with.

Since I moved here I have experienced an alarming issue with nightly drag races in the area. This is unfortunately wide spread, as I've moved twice for work reasons and both areas have had this happening. Cedar Hills Blvd, Walker Road, Cornell Road, 185th Ave and Cornelius Pass all have individuals who drag race down the roads at high speeds during the evening and early morning hours (occasionally happening during the day as well.) This causes a huge amount of noise pollution and most importantly a deadly safety concern.

On September 22nd 2022 two young women were hit by a vehicle fleeing police at 170mph traveling south bound on 185th Ave between the crossroads of Cornell and Walker. The car with the two women in it was split in half and burst into flames on impact. They were pronounced dead at the scene. They were 19 and 20 year old cousins on their way home from the grocery store. One suspect was taken to the hospital and one fled on foot, yet to be located. I heard the crash and sirens that night, as did many people I work with. I've heard more racing every night since the accident. These drag racers are costing people their lives and in two years there has been nothing done to stop or deter them.

Im asking all of you to help me get this petition signed to demand speed cameras be placed in these dangerous corridors and to raise the minimum fine on individuals who are caught driving at excessively high speeds. Being caught driving at 30+ mph above the speed limit (a class A traffic violation) has a minimum fine of $220 and max of $2000 in Hillsboro where the fatal crash occurred. I feel this is not nearly steep enough for the reality of what happens when cars collide driving at excessive speeds and the high probability for loss of life. I propose a minimum of $1000 should be implemented with a maximum of $4000. For reference these roads mostly have speed limits of 45mph meaning a class A violation would be driving 75mph or higher. This awful accident that happened was caused by an individual driving almost twice that speed.

I'm asking you to please sign and share this because I believe everyone in this community should be safe and right now they aren't. No one should ever have to experience what those girls families are going through.

Here is a link too the family's GoFundMe for the funeral costs if you'd like to support them through this time.

Thank you
