The Issue

Per someone’s suggestion let me start this petition by simply saying “many people dislike speed cushions”!

Speed bumps have become a concern for many in our neighborhoods in Nashville. Residents like myself know firsthand they can damage your vehicle and potentially hinder life-saving emergency vehicles getting to those in need in a timely manner.

Our concerns go beyond just the existing speed bumps. We seek changes to future traffic calming measures in our neighborhood. We ask for 1) more publicly announced community meetings to discuss traffic calming if requested or required 2) provide alternative traffic calming measures and not just one method (speed bumps) 3) NDOT must obtain or receive input from a 75% majority of the voting request sent out, and 4) NDOT must include a significant portion of the affected neighborhood to actually vote on the subject.

The need for alternatives to speed bumps has been substantiated by various studies. Research shows speed humps can slow down the response time of emergency vehicles. According to Traffic Logix, speed humps can approximately slow down fire trucks by 9-10 seconds per hump, which can indeed have significant repercussions during an emergency (Traffic Logix, Emergency Vehicles & Speed Bumps – The Facts).

It's high time that we, the residents of Charlotte Park and Nashville , have a say in these matters that can impact our lives daily. We respectfully urge the local government to stop the installation of speed bumps and instead seek safer and more effective traffic calming measures, based on the will and input of the majority of the neighborhood's inhabitants. Let's empower the community to decide on its own traffic solutions. Please sign this petition to make our voices heard.
