My campaign Failed by the system was created after my own experience of the education system and how its treats the most vulnerable children and young adults.
In my personal experience in high school I developed mental health issues and I was also diagnosed at 13 with Asperger’s syndrome (a form of autism now diagnosed as asd).

Because of my mental health struggles, I couldn’t cope any longer in the mainstream school setting I was in. There were many aspects to why this happened to name a few: Cuts to send services, not enough training, late diagnosis is, and the list goes on.
Asperger’s is classed as “high functioning “and so I was too high functioning to go to a special needs school, but I couldn’t cope with mainstream.
I was placed into a pupil referral unit. Pupil referral units take a variety of different kinds of students and they can be more detrimental than good for a lot of people.
It is wrong that there are no suitable provisions for people who have a disability and mental health and are either forced to not be in education all together or are forced into a toxic and unhelpful environment.

In the UK we strive for equality and acceptance, yet we are still so behind. Everyone deserves their best chance. Additional support to those who need it should be mandatory and not a battle all the time and the system needs to change. This Is not a unique story, and this happens to thousands of young people who end up slipping through the cracks and not being given their right to the support they need.
My motto of this campaign is “change the system not the person “because all too often schools and the government will try and mould young people into how they should be instead of adapting to the young person’s needs!
