Samantha is a mom. She’s also a military spouse, a Republican, and the mother of two medically fragile children. On live television, she begged House Speaker Mike Johnson to end the government shutdown because her kids’ lives depend on it.

“If we see a lapse in pay, my children don’t get the medication they need to live,” she told him, her voice shaking. “My kids could die.”

Her husband has served two tours in Afghanistan and is currently active-duty. Their family lives paycheck to paycheck, like many military families across the country. With the shutdown now threatening military paychecks, moms like Samantha are being forced to choose between buying food and life-saving prescriptions.

Speaker Johnson listened. He even said this is what keeps him up at night. But what we need is more than sympathy. We need action — now.

We are calling on Speaker Mike Johnson to immediately bring the House back into session and pass a clean, standalone bill to guarantee military pay and protect the children and families of those who serve. No partisan language. No finger-pointing. Just a simple promise that our troops and their families will not be punished because Congress can’t do its job.

Shutdowns may be political, but these consequences are personal. Sick children shouldn’t lose access to medicine. Military families shouldn’t face eviction notices or missed bills. 

Speaker Johnson, you said you care. Prove it. Bring the troops’ pay bill to a vote. Do it for Samantha. Do it for her kids. Do it for every family sacrificing to protect this country.
