I don't know how many of you know I have been having trouble with British Airways. I am due to fly out of the UK to visit my family in Arizona this weekend. I have not been able to get permission to bring my much needed owner trained Guide/Seizure Response Assistance Dog, Bear. All the airlines in the UK are functioning under a loophole in the law that allows them to make their own rules. As such, recently, they have closed ranks and will only allow ADUK or IGDF assistance dogs to leave the UK on their planes. I know people who have travelled to mainland Europe by ferry and gotten flights with these same airlines with their service/assistance dogs with no trouble at all.
So why is this? Why this discrimination? I have been fighting against this widespread and blatant discrimination in all sectors of UK life for three years now. Ignorant businesses have been putting up signs that they only accept ADI (ADUK here) dogs to be allowed in. There is a climate of fear in our community. People do not know what the law is because of ADI propaganda. Eurostar has just backed off from a similar situation only due to the perseverance Sharon Lawrence. Bear & I have been to Parliament to see what is going on with this issue. On that occasion I was not able to take him on a one hour flight within the UK on another airline, Easyjet. This was in spite of a letter from the government to them.
Ignorance is not the problem with the airlines.
British Airways gave me some hope when they said they would consider Bear. I sent them letters written by doctors, stores, friends, schools and other businesses that attest that yes I do need my dog and that he does act appropriately. Video and photographic evidence as well.
I have had no word from British Airways for weeks now and I assume they are waiting out the date of my departure rather than speak one way or another. At least Easyjet gave me a firm “no” eventually. I worry about my health on this trip without my service/assistance dog. I will be confined to my wheelchair due to this discrimination against non-ADI assistance dogs. I cannot risk a fall due to my sight loss or seizures. As a result I fear this may be my last trip to visit my family unless changes are made here.
I have been advised by a US lawyer that once I reach US airspace British Airways will be in violation of my US rights. I have been told to have a press conference and to sue.
Any help or ideas would be great. I want to get these bastards!
