South L.A. wants a Sustainable Green Park; City Plans Concrete Slab & Security Fencing
The Issue
South L.A. Wants a Green Park
At the corner of Slauson and Figueroa Streets in South Los Angeles there is a parcel of land that has sat vacant and polluted since 1959. It is the City of Los Angeles that polluted this land. For more than six decades this public parcel sat empty, fenced and unavailable to the community. To the DWP's credit in recent years it remediated the soil and transferred the land to the Department of Recreation of Parks along with $3.6 million dollars to become a city park.
THIS IS GREAT! Unfortunately, despite the community's documented desire for a open, green and sustainable park the design the city produced is counter to the feedback they received. Their design is mostly concrete and pavers surrounded by steel security fencing. The security fencing cuts off access to the park from the adjacent bikeway.
The Voices Neighborhood Council has been reaching out for more than seven months to the city advocating for a greener park but have encountered only a solid wall of 'There is nothing you can do.'
If you would like to see a park that is a jewel of sustainability in South L.A and not just more concrete and fencing consider adding your name to this petition.
It is appreciated.
