South Carolina State University has educated and cultivated individuals since its founding in 1896. It's the state's sole public HBCU and has continued to prepare its students for professional and personal success. Alumni include U.S. Rep. James Clyburn, the House Assistant Minority Leader. HBCUs have made a major contribution to American society, especially in the African American community. Nowadays, they are under-funded, at risk for losing their accreditation, and being forced to closed their doors.
