The Issue

Brooks Michael Martin, a healthy little boy just months shy of his 2nd birthday, died on November 7, 2010 after succumbing to injuries sustained two days prior while at an in-home daycare. His autopsy states the cause of death was severe cerebral edema due to blunt force trauma. The manner of death is currently listed as homicide.

The babysitter's husband, Michael Creech, initially reported these injuries occurred because Brooks fell down the stairs. However, doctors and nurses were suspicious due to the type and severity of Brooks' injuries.

Creech was eventually charged with homicide by child abuse. The initial warrant alleged that he "unlawfully, willfully, and knowingly caused the death" of Brooks. According to the warrant, medical experts determined Brooks' death was "the result of non-accidental trauma."

Months later, and after many disagreements between the law enforcement agencies involved, charges were dropped. Ten years have passed and the family still has many unanswered questions about what happened to Brooks. The case needs to be reopened and reexamined.

The State newspaper in South Carolina recently published a series of chapters detailing Brooks' death and the law enforcement missteps that followed:

  • Chapter 1 - "Was it an accident, or was he killed? SC parents haunted by son’s death 10 years later"
  • Chapter 2 - "Would SC parents be left with closure or more questions after probe into son’s death?"
  • Chapter 3 -"SC parents lost hope in probe of son’s death. Would a top SLED agent bring justice?"
  • Chapter 4 - "Would there be a trial? SC parents left with choice as officials argue over son’s death"
  • Chapter 5 - "‘The system didn’t help them.’ Would SC child’s death be handled differently today?"
  • Chapter 6 - "What former top SC SLED investigator would and wouldn’t say about Brooks Martin case"

Sign this petition to encourage South Carolina law enforcement to reopen the investigation of Brooks Martin's untimely and tragic death.
