Kangaroo Island Cruise Ship Visitation - who benefits?

The issue

Kangaroo Island is a well-known tourism destination for people who want to experience wild landscapes, coastal vistas, wildlife, rugged isolation, food and wine.  Relatively recently cruise ships have begun to visit during the Island's peak season and this has been causing some concern.  Firstly, decisions are being made off-island without community input.  There are economic benefits although those businesses that do benefit are few.  In trying to clarify assumptions those in positions of power provide unsubstantiated statistical data, and the figures provided vary depending on who has been approached. There is no visitation fee charged.  The community pays for waste bin removal. KI receives funding for its hospital based on resident numbers and the influx is stretching resources particularly for our volunteer ambulance officers. Reports of long-lines of cruise ship passengers waiting at our iconic attractions may not only cause disappointment but turn off potential future visitors and thus threaten our future.  I have not even started to approach the environmental impacts as fighting a powerful global industry is not my intention.  My intention is for the island to make decisions about its future.  Support this petition if you have visited Kangaroo Island or wish to in the future.
