SVAS post: if you don’t want to read it scroll on by!
There is so much information in this response. I will correct it in this post and on petition. So if you are asking SVAS questions at their upcoming “stakeholder” meeting, please inform them.
1. No one can “pull” from the city pound unless you are the owner of the animal. After the 3 day hold is over, the ownership of the animal transfers from the City of Minot pound to Minot Vet Clinic. Minot Vet Clinic then allows rescues/shelters to pull animals to safety. Minot Vet Clinic does require these entities to spay/neuter before adoption or require puppies/kittens to be fixed when ready. SVAS refuses to to comply with this stipulation which is why they do not allow them to pull from their clinic.
You will not find a law on city books because the requirement does not involve the pound process.
2. Capacity for care: Hairball Haven pulls cats from Minot only and only ones that are not claimed by owners. Some of these cats are from SVAS adoptions that they would not responsibly take back into their care. So SVAS is directly impacting other rescues here.
3. SVAS states when they ”are full”. According to recent interview of Shelbi Waters, they only run at 80% capacity in shelter and in fosters. They are never at capacity in their new 3.5 million dollar building.
4. SVAS is again bashing a surrender event that was obviously severely needed for unwanted local animals. 210 local animals were saved from being dumped, PTS or from fending on their own in negative degree weather to freeze to death. Furthermore, SVAS had previously participated in 2 surrender events in our state and pulled animals from these events so their arguement is moot. They were invited to attend and chose not to in their own neighborhoods they serve.
5. THEY DO NOT TAKE IN MORE LOCAL ANIMALS THAN HAIRBALL HAVEN. We can see their exact intake numbers on shelteranimalscount.org
6. SVAS policy is problem in our state if they continue to bring in multiple loads of animals from out of state (in uhauls from the planes…where’s their transport vehicle they begged for donation for and claim they got grant for?) 300+ animals they have brought in. 300 animals that some are taking up space in our other rescues/shelters, taking up vet appointments, being bred or came here pregnant and making more animals, and I could go on and on….
Please sign and share the petition! One voice for our states animals…OUR LOCAL ANIMALS!!!
