Let me explain no kill. There are zero facilities in North Dakota that are 100% no kill. Animals can come to the facilities severely sick, injured, be injured in facilities or get an unseen illness in the facilities. The humane thing to do in these cases unfortunately is to euthanize them. Any facility that has a 90% or higher save rate(live release to owners or another facility) are considered NO KILL.
2019: pound was at 88.89%
2020: pound was NO KILL at 91.92%
2021: pound was 88.21%
When reading the pounds rates, one needs to keep in mind that the animals here are not hand picked by staff, not transferred here by their partner facility, not ever turned away because of space, pound has zero “wait-list” and will euthanize for space because of the exploding animal population in Minot at this time. You cannot “pull” animals from the pound unless you are the owner in the mandatory 3 day waiting period(Minot vet does hold animals longer if there is space.) Once this waiting period is over, Minot Vet has fulfilled its contractual duty to the City of Minot and the animals ownership then transfers from the City of Minot Pound to Minot Vet Clinic.
At this time, the Minot Vet Clinic chooses to send as many animals into rescue as they can to save the animals. One of the requirements to “pull” these animals after waiting period is ALL animals must have 100% compliance on vaccinations, spay and neuter to curb the population here. The current organizations that “pull” from Minot Vet Clinic ALL meet the requirements set forth by Minot Vet Clinic and have met them in many, many years.
SVAS is not banned from pulling animals from the Clinic, but must comply with the same requirements as all the others to make it fair to all organizations. (BUT IMO after all the bashing, all the sneaky stuff with city, and the general disregard for the overpopulation, if I owned Minot Vet Clinic, I would not partner with them either until changes have been made starting at the top.)
