SOS: Save Our South Bank
The Issue
London’s South Bank – one of the UK’s most popular open spaces – is threatened by a massive over-development. Please support our campaign to protect the riverside by signing the petition below.
We, the undersigned, called on decision-makers Lambeth Council to reject plans for a huge new building on Upper Ground and the South Bank riverside.
However decision makers at Lambeth Council were not prepared to listen and approved the plans. So the SOS Save Our South Bank campaigners asked the Secretary of State, to intervene and ‘call-in’ this development.
The Secretary of State decided to exercise his powers in section 77 of the 1990 Act to determine the planning application for the former London Television Centre, 60-72 Upper Ground, London SE1 instead of London Borough of Lambeth.
An Inspector held the public inquiry which will opened on 6 December 2022 and ran until the 25 January 2023.
The Inspector’s report is expected to be submitted to the Secretary of State on or before 29 March 2023 (to be confirmed).
The date by when the application will be decided will be published at the time the report is submitted to the Secretary of State.

The Mitsubishi estate and its developers CO-RE submitted a proposal for the redevelopment of ITV’s former home into offices and retail space. The scale, bulk and siting of this proposed development is ugly, overbearing and overly dominant for its prominent position on South Bank (see infographic above).
The building’s neighbours and the wider community say it will spoil this unique area of London, destroying views, robbing homes of daylight, and casting the riverside walkway and nearby Bernie Spain Gardens into shadow.
Objections made to Lambeth Council by residents included:
“…People’s lives will be ruined and issues with health, general wellbeing and harmful impact on mental health will last for years & years ahead.”

London’s South Bank is a vibrant hub of culture and heritage, attracting millions of visitors every year. We must ensure it stays that way.
We acknowledge the need for the redevelopment of this site. However, in such a treasured area of London for locals and tourists alike, neighboured by listed IBM and National Theatre buildings, the design must protect and enhance rather than dominate its surroundings.
Decision-makers Lambeth Council failed to take onboard the impact this build will have on local people. They have ignored suggestions for a smaller design that complements the surrounding area and adds value, for the local community and London as a whole.
We need your help to achieve this, please sign and help us Save Our South Bank.
