Free street parking for health care workers working in Metro Melbourne

The issue

With our current healthcare crisis and COVID surge in Victoria, many people know that Nurses, Doctors and other healthcare workers (HCW) are working their butts off caring for the sick. We are regularly working short staffed and undertaking long shifts with few breaks. Everyone acknowledges this.

What most people are horrified to learn is the healthcare workers within Metro Melbourne often have to pay a small fortune (up to $25/shift) to park whilst we do these shifts. Hospitals do not offer free parking for staff and surrounding car parks are very expensive. Many staff end up catching Public Transport to avoid paying these hefty costs.

During previous lockdowns, both the City of Melbourne and City of Yarra gave out limited permits to HCW as recognition of our hard work. These permits permitted us to access free parking on the streets surrounding our large metropolitan hospitals and were truly appreciated by the staff.

Despite now being the worst it has been since the COVID pandemic, HCW are now having to pay for parking. Working 12 hour shifts can post a real issue with accessing any paid street parking and is also an issue for those who rely on public transport because they can't afford the parking. We also believe that hopping on public transport wearing scrubs that have been exposed to COVID positive patients probably isn't in the best interests of our fine city! Also, walking some distance to your car (post-12 hour shift) can seem like an overwhelming task

We would love the City of Yarra and the City of Melbourne to re-instate the permit system for ALL HCW and allow us to have free on-street parking until at least the end of April 2022 when hopefully this surge will have passed. This would greatly ease the financial burden and worry on hard-working health care workers and also be a lovely token of recognition.

I would like this to be a state-wide initiative but am focusing only on Metro Melbourne at the moment due to the costs associated as I am unsure what the parking situation is like for our colleagues in more regional areas.
