Sony has announced that come March 2019, they will cease production of physical Vita game cards leaving the PlayStation Store as the only way to purchase game content. This sad news comes as little surprise. Despite its popularity in Japan, Vita hasn't sold very well in the West. Sony themselves have primarily shifted focus to the PS4 and now market the Vita as a PS4 remote play device first and foremost. If physical Vita games are a priority to you, now until March 2019 is your last chance to purchase new games before Sony stops making them. Whence remaining stock dries up, your only options will be preowned titles and digital downloads. Digital downloads can be a convenient option, but they take up considerable space. With games ranging from several hundred MB to a few GB in size. This wouldn't be a problem if not for the ridiculously expensive proprietary memory cards that max out at only 64GB. I currently own TWO 64GB memory cards and one 32GB card. The advantage to using physical game cards is they don't take up as much space, usually a few hundred kilobytes to a few megabytes for game saves and patches. Which leaves you more space form games you can only get digitally, like PSone Classics and digital PSP games. With a purely digital route on the horizon, the only thing that could further hurt the Vita is if Sony discontinued the production of memory cards too. We all want them, but we all hate them. But the fact remains that the Vita is the only device that is able to use those cards. The best that we can hope for is that in light of the end of production of physical game cards, Sony releases a much larger Vita memory card. Perhaps in the 216GB or 256GB range? Maybe 512GB? We can dream. In other news, Sony ceased the ability to purchase Movies and TV Shows via the PS3 yesterday. Currently, such videos are still available for purchase and download via the Vita and PSTV, but of course in standard definition only. At least the PSTV does a good job upscaling. It would be foolish for Sony to cease the purchase of video content via the Vita and PSTV, since they marketed the PSTV as PS4 streaming device, game console and media set top box all in one.
