Somalia Food Insecurity

The Issue

Due to the continuous climate change, Somalia has experienced harsh droughts and floods during the last 10 years. In these ten years, millions of people starve and die due to the food insecurity. Out of all the victims, we find the chlidren and infants being the most affected. Nearly 60,000 children, or 67% of the total, are acutely malnourished in Baidoa(southern Somalia) , according to data from the most recent nutrition surveys.

Until 2023, Somalia has already experienced three rainy seasons with insufficient rainfall. Ongoing, the condition is only going to get worse. If action is not fast, Somalia could become a land of famine and chaos. Now, the spread of a drought resistant crop would be both suitable and helpful to the country's agriculture today. To that, my reccomendation is to largely cultivate sorghum, and especially a type of bred sorghum called Qudhac. According to Abdiweli Mohamed, one of the farmers who developed the crop, “Qudhac is a game-changer for Somali farmers, It means that we will be able to grow food even in the driest years.”

Now is the time to act for it, international organizations such as the International Rescue Committee (IRC), the United Nations (UN) are distributing food and resources. But it is not enough, to escape the current situation, we need to work together. Please to pay attention to these organizations that support the victims.
