Stop educational institutes in the UK from raising and sending their animals to slaughter
The Issue
Some colleges around the UK such as those that teach Animal Management courses have animals including livestock on-site which are beneficial in the education of students studying courses relating to Animal Care and the Land-based industries. Though, it has been a practice at two colleges (that are known, there could be many more) in the UK for them to send their farm animals off to slaughter when they reach a certain weight.
**** Please note, no information has been provided by any colleges in the UK of which or what abattoirs their animals go to, the nature of the slaughter and processes leading up to slaughter, transport, protocols or codes of conduct, standards, behaviour of abattoir workers etc., so we cannot make any such statement in relation to the way in which these animals are treated when transported and slaughtered. ****
However, regardless of how 'humane' these animals are treated whilst on-site at educational facilities, in transport or when they are slaughtered, these creatures have a right to life. They feel pain, pleasure, fear, frustration, loneliness, and motherly love. We believe that every creature with a will to live has a right to live free from pain and suffering. Animal rights is not just a philosophy - it is a social movement that challenges society’s traditional view that all nonhuman animals exist solely for human use. Each one values his or her life and fights the knife.
And how can institutes teach 'Animal Care' courses and teach us to look after pet animals such as cats and dogs, but then send farm animals to slaughter, sending the message that it's okay to slaughter an innocent being that trusts us for their survival and safety? There is no humane way to kill someone who simply does not want to die.
150 years ago, Americans would have thought you were absurd if you advocated for the end of slavery. 100 years ago, they would have laughed at you for suggesting that women should have the right to vote. 50 years ago, they would [have] loudly objected at the idea of African Americans receiving equal rights under the law. They laugh at us now for suggesting that animal slavery be ended. Some day they won’t be laughing.
- Gary Smith (2011)
Why love one but eat another? The answer is species-ism. Just as racism is an irrational prejudice towards someone because of their ethnicity, and sexism is an irrational prejudice towards someone because of their gender, species-ism is an irrational prejudice towards someone because of their species.
Information on the ethical issues, human rights issues, health issues and environmental issues in relation to the meat, dairy and egg industries can be found on websites such as PETA, The Vegan Society, Mercy For Animals etc. and many many more. **** Please note that any information found on the internet is not necessarily a reflection of the practice of institutes and their abattoirs in the UK and is based on a large industry point of view. We have no evidence to suggest that educational institutes act in the manner that is commonly seen via slaughterhouse footage. ****
Please watch Earthlings and Cowspiracy on Youtube/Netflix, or elsewhere online and sign and share our petition to prevent the unnecessary slaughter of our earthlings. We want these animals to know that someone out there cares.
