Social Media Ban for U16's in New Zealand

Social Media Ban for U16's in New Zealand
The issue
For many young people in New Zealand, social media platforms are an integral part of their daily lives, shaping the way they communicate, learn, and even perceive themselves. However, for persons under the age of 16, these platforms can be damaging to mental health and may foster early addiction, leading to long-term consequences.
Platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and Facebook are designed to be addicting, keeping users engaged for prolonged periods. Studies have shown that excessive use of social media can result in anxiety, depression, and poor self-esteem among teenagers. The pressure to maintain an idealized online persona and the potential exposure to cyberbullying can exacerbate these negative effects.
We propose that the New Zealand Parliament take measures to restrict social media access for persons under 16. This includes implementing stricter age verification processes. We can look towards countries like Australia, where steps have already been taken to introduce similar regulations for the protection of persons under the age of 16.
Taking action now will ensure the well-being of future generations. Children and teenagers deserve to grow in an environment that prioritizes their physical and mental well-being over digital engagement metrics.
Please sign this petition to show support for the Social Media (Age Restricted Users) Bill. The Bill mandates that social media platforms implement strict age verification measures to prevent under-16s from creating accounts. Additionally, it promotes digital literacy and public awareness programs to educate and children on safe online behaviour. This Bill provides a proactive, enforceable solution to safegaurd children while fostering a safer digital enviroment.
