Alliance against physical restraint in psychiatric care (精神科医療の身体拘束を考える会)
Mar 29, 2018
Thanks for your continued support. We have 4292 signatures now. Let’s try to get more to pressure the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. The deadline for their committee on restraints to report is meant to be tomorrow, so we may soon find out whether they have suggested any real changes. Our petition may help to ensure that they actually implement them. In the meantime, activities since the last update include: Kelly’s mother Martha Savage has made a submission to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities in response to their questionnaire on the rights of persons with disabilities to the highest attainable standard of health. Martha included several articles that had appeared in peer-reviewed English articles about the high rate of restraints in Japanese psychiatric hospitals compared to the rest of the world. The Wikipedia biography about Kelly was rejected because a single incident is not considered enough to make a person prominent enough for a biography. However, they said that an article about the incident of his death might be accepted, especially if real change occurs. So it is another reason to try to strive for change. We have continued to modify other English-language Wikipedia pages to make sure that the world is aware of the problems of psychiatric care in Japan. Volunteers for help with Japanese Wikipedia pages are still welcome.
