Thank you for supporting our petition, “End long-term restraint in psychiatric care (精神科医療における身体拘束の状況の改善を求める)”. The supporters’ comments include many kind words and helpful messages—Martha has been reading every one of them. We want you to know that pressure from the media attention has already resulted in two positive outcomes: Yamato hospital has given us Kelly’s medical records, and the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has agreed to hold an investigation into Kelly’s case in particular and the greater problem of the use of restraints on psychiatric patients in general, as well as the failure of the Medsafe system to properly address problems in the medical system. We still need your support to ensure that the investigation results in serious change, so your continued promotion of the petition will be helpful. Specifically, the government just announced a complete reshuffle of the Cabinet, including changing the Minister of Health Labour and Welfare. So we need to show the new minister that there is strong support for a change. We have 1847 supporters of the petition at my recent check, from many countries. If we can get over 2000, we will be able to say that we have the support of thousands of people from around the world. If you each could get just one more person to sign, we will be well over that amount.
